Living in Denmark

This is a picture taken in Copenhagen in a street called “Store Kongensgade”. The buildings are believed to be the oldest that can be found today in the city.

It’s a great country. No doubt about it. It’s small, cozy, beautiful, safe, quite, with the highest standards and more. I got my education here in a great university (DTU) and worked in one of the biggest Danish company (Mærsk). It has been a great experience, a way to learn a lot and meet lots of cool people. I also love that you can bike everywhere, public transport is so convenient, there is flight connection to everywhere in the world more or less, the flexible hours at work, the abundance of gyms, the work-life balance, many opportunities to attend all sort of courses to acquire new knowledge, many good restaurants and good coffee and juice places and so on.

Now, what I don’t like so much are: taxes, weather in winter, high prices for everything, relatively narrow job market,  and the difficulty of Danish language. I pay an effective tax of 46% and on top of that there is 25% on everything you buy, tax property, shared charges for the apartment and so on. I just think it’s too much and there are very few countries in the world were a citizen pays at this extend! Maybe it’s because I am a foreigner and this system is not in my blood! I have been challenged with the language a lot. It’s quite hard in terms or pronunciation and listening (words are written and read differently). However just the fact that I have been here 8 ½ years, I can now understand everything and can speak the language! Job market is narrow. There are only few big companies and job openings are not so many and rare. Since I have been involved in the oil industry, there is only one company (my current employee) that can employee me. There is however a boom in startup companies. The other thing too, is that since the education if free, almost everyone is highly educated and so there is high supply for any job opening.

I will be sharing more on what you can do in Copenhagen, travelling around the city and so on.

I will also offer tours in Copenhagen for groups/individuals that are interested. Please contact me at contact@ledianselimaj.com for more details and to arrange accordingly.
